Royal Holloway University of London - Reading Rooms
Reinstating joinery items in a site examined by Victorian England and Conservation
Following the successful completion of a new accessibility ramp at the Royal Holloway University of London, Francis Joinery was awarded a second contract in the Founder’s building.
This project involved the replication and replacement of missing components to the bookcases in the reading rooms of the Founder’s building at the Royal Holloway University of London. A turnkey service was provided to copy and fit the ornate features.
Using Quarter Sawn English Oak, egg and dart carving with frosting details were incorporated over a dental detail. Pull handles were replicated from solid brass.Completed elements were then French polished, sympathetically finished to match the existing furniture.
As the reading rooms were operational throughout the works, the team kept noise to a minimum and worked with stakeholders to ensure installation was carried out without disrupting users of the university’s library
